Interior Decorating As a Career

Interior Design is the study and discipline of improving the interior of an establishment to make it a more aesthetically pleasing and healthy environment for those using the room. An interior designer is usually someone who studies, plans, coordinates and oversees such improvement projects. A successful designer must be creative, innovative, imaginative, resourceful, and able to organize a large staff to accomplish the design goals. Successful designers are very good at communication and working as a team.

Designing an office space can be extremely stressful for interior designers. Aesthetics must be carefully planned to avoid confusing the customer. Interior designers are also often required to coordinate with architects and engineers from various disciplines. This coordination and interdepartmental communications skill are very important. Interior designers must be able to explain their ideas to customers in a clear and concise manner.

Interior Designers may need to take a basic art degree if they plan on specializing in the field. Interior Designers may need to obtain a degree in interior design in order to qualify for a career in this field. There are several schools that offer interdisciplinary programs that will help an interdisciplinary student to acquire a bachelor’s degree in Interior Design. An interdisciplinary program will allow the student to pursue his or her creative passion while gaining experience with leadership positions in the field. The master’s degree will enable the interior designer to further their career with research and certification programs.

Interior Designers may need to take additional classes if they plan on specializing in the field. Interior designers usually need to take a variety of classes in drawing, architecture, drafting, interior design, computer-aided design, and lighting. These classes will be beneficial to the interior designer’s career. Usually the bachelor’s degree takes four years to complete.

There are many benefits to being an interior designer. One of the main benefits is being able to set your own hours. In today’s fast paced world most people do not have the luxury of spending eight hours a day inside of their homes. Interior decorators can work all day and come home and rest up for the night.

Another benefit of being an interior decorator is learning how to make structural changes within a home. When working on a design project you may be asked to analyze a space or room and make structural changes that are aesthetically pleasing. This could include changing the way lighting is done, altering the placement of windows, and altering the amount of flooring materials used. Some design projects may also call for making aesthetic structural changes such as installing new roofing materials or a different flooring type. Aesthetics are also considered by interior decorators when making structural changes to a space.
